Team USA fighters Roscoe Hill and Alyssa Mendoza both earned unanimous decision victories in their respective fights at the Second World Qualification Tournament on Sunday in Bangkok, Thailand, earning their spots to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Hill, of Springs, Texas, took an early 5-0 lead after the first round in his bout, as his length and speed caused problems for Mongolia’s Gan-Erdene Gankhuyang. Hill won the second round 4-1 and blanked Gankhuyang 5-0 in the final round to coast to the decision.
“It feels good, as I just qualified,” Hill said. “Thank everyone for supporting me and following me, but the gold medal is next.”
Mendoza, of Caldwelll, Idaho, finished an impressive run in the tournament by besting the Netherlands’ Gan-Erdene Gankhuyang in Sunday’s final. Mendoza won all her qualification bouts on unanimous decisions.
‘We did it,” Mendoza said. “It was a long journey, but I did it. We got the ticket, and on to Paris next.”
Jamar Talley, of Camden, New Jersey, on Sunday suffered a loss against Georgia’s Georgii Kushitashvili, falling short on a 3-2 split decision.
