Veteran trainer Robert Garcia is confident that former world champion Amir Khan (31-4, 19KOs) can bounce back after last Saturday's brutal knockout at the hands of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Khan was boxing on is toes until he was knocked out cold by a big right hand in the sixth round. It marked the third, and what seemed to be the most vicious, knockout loss of Khan's pro career.
He was previously knocked out in one round by Breidis Prescott at lightweight in 2008, and stopped in four rounds by Danny Garcia in 2012.
Khan has been able to rebuild his career after each knockout, and Garcia feels the Bolton fighter can do it again.
The fight with Canelo took place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds, where they battled for the WBC middleweight title. Khan is planning to return to the welterweight limit of 147, where he's still the mandatory challenger to Danny Garcia's WBC championship.
Khan is advised by Al Haymon, who also advises at least a dozen of the top welterweights - which gives Khan a lot of options to choose from at the weight.
"There are different fighters who take a knockout differently.... their body, their mind, their brain take it differently. Khan has been knocked out before - not only once, not only twice. He's been knocked out a few times before and he comes back. He looked okay after the fight. He seemed okay about it. I seen some videos and some interviews of him and he looked good. He's probably one of those fighters who gets knocked out and does his things good or even better," Garcia explained to BoxingScene.com.
"There are some fighters who get knocked out once and never recover from that and are never able to be the same. Khan is one that recovers and stay healthy, maybe stays in the gym and maybe that's probably the reason.. I have no idea, but he recovers well. So I think Khan still has some good fights, especially if he comes down to welterweight - he still has a lot of big fights out there."
