Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach believes Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be haunted for the rest of their lives if they don't fight each other next year.
Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, is trying to make the fight with CBS head honcho Les Moonves. CBS is the parent company of Showtime, who have Mayweather under an exclusive contract.
Pacquiao returned on Saturday night in Macau, where he battered Chris Algieri with six knockdowns for a twelve round unanimous decision.
“I think there will ... always be an asterisk on their records,” said Roach. “Let’s face it, the best should fight the best and they’ve been the best guys out there. This is something that will haunt them forever if it doesn’t happen.”
If the fight actually happens, Roach anticipates a very tough match. With Arum growing in confident that a fight will actually happen in 2015, Roach has already started reviewing Mayweather's past fights.
“He will be the best opponent that we’ve ever faced. I will really have to do my homework with Mayweather because he puts a lot of things together a lot better than most fighters,” Roach said. “Put it this way, I’m starting to watch tapes of Mayweather."
