Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach is hoping that former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs) is able to secure a rematch, at some point, with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26KOs).
Cotto gave Mayweather a serious run for his money in May of 2012, but ultimately lost a twelve round unanimous decision. Mayweather called it the "toughest fight" of his career. At the time Cotto was trained by Cuban trainer Pedro Diaz, but last year the Puerto Rican star switched over to Roach.
On June 7th at New York's Madison Square Garden, Cotto has a tall order in front him. He will move up to middleweight to challenge WBC champion Sergio Martinez. If everything goes well with the Martinez fight, Roach would like to get Cotto in the ring with Mayweather for a second time.
"I think if I would have trained Miguel for that fight and been in the corner, he would have won. I really believe that. After the fight with Sergio Martinez, hopefully we can get a rematch with Mayweather," Roach told BoxingScene.com.
