An inquest into the death of Ricky Hatton heard that he was found unresponsive in his bedroom on the morning of Sunday September 14.
It is believed the 46-year-old took his own life, according to a provisional cause of death which opened the inquest at South Manchester Coroners’ Court. A full inquest is now pending and will take place in 2026.
The court was told that Hatton, the former junior welterweight and welterweight world champion, was found unresponsive by his manager and friend Paul Speak.
Hatton had last been seen by his family, and appeared “well”, two days before on September 12. He did not attend an event where he was expected to be present on September 13. He was due to fly to Dubai on September 14 to promote a comeback bout scheduled for December and it was then that Speak, who was due to travel with him, found Hatton unresponsive.
News of his passing caused shock among his family, friends and fans. Hatton had long spoke of his battle with depression but was thought to be in a “good place” in the weeks before his death.
His funeral, which occurred on October 10, attracted thousands of mourners to the streets of Manchester, all eager to say goodbye to a British legend.
