The up-and-down career of fringe featherweight contender Rene Alvarado took a turn for the positive on Saturday evening, scoring a 3rd round knockout of overmatched Rafael Castillo at home in Managua, Nicaragua.
Castillo was game, but the beating dished out by Alvarado was brutal. The former Top 10 featherweight landed right hands at will, also scoring in combinations as Castillo foolishly attempted to match the crowd favorite punch-for-punch.
The strategy played well into Alvarado's hands, who leaves with his quickest win in nearly 14 months. The 26-year old moves to 22-4 (15KOs) with a much-needed win, after having dropped competitive but clear decision losses to Rocky Juarez and Eric Hunter over the course of the past 10 months.
Alvarado rose to prominence following an upset knockout win over Robinson Castellanos last February on the road in Mexico. The win was to lead to a title fight with Jhonny Gonzalez, but that dream disappeared with the shocking loss to Juarez in what was meant to be a water-treading fight against a faded high-profile opponent.
The bout aired live on Canal 6 in Nicaragua.
