According to former WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22KOs), there is no financial reward in accepting a fight with WBA/IBO/WBC interim-champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28KOs).
Regarding a potential fight with Golovkin, Quillin says the opponents of the dangerous Kazakhstan puncher are not getting paid a lot of money [at least in comparison to what Quillin makes].
“Gennady Golovkin is a scary boogeyman. His name is there, but the money and business behind him is not equaling up to each other. Gennady Golovkin is looking for that payday too. The name doesn’t really bring much to the table besides a high risk fight with a low reward. Just saying to a bunch of fans - ‘I beat Gennady Golovkin' - that’s all it really does [in fighting and beating him]. I’m not thinking like that. I’m not thinking of beating this guy because of the fans," Quillin told IFL TV.
"The fans only do so much for you. I believe that if you're a true fan of somebody, you support them for the reasons that you do. Like Muhammad Ali, can you remember all of the fights that he fought? You only remember the good fights that he fought. And that goes for Sugar Ray Leonard and everyone else. You only remember those career defining fights."
Two weeks ago, Andy Lee and Matt Korobov fought for the world title that Quillin vacated. Quillin passed on a $1.4 million dollar payday, but says there are a lot of things that went on behind the scenes that most observers are not aware of, on a personal and a business level. It remains to be seen when Quillin will return and how much he will make in comparison to what he turned down.
"From what I heard, Andy Lee got $220,000 dollars and Matt Korobov got $160 [thousand dollars]. [Korobov] would have got $400,000 to get knocked out by Kid Chocolate but instead he got 160 to get knocked out by Andy Lee," Quillin said.
