On the night of August 9th, both Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia defeated overmatched foes at the Barclay Center on a card televised by Showtime that was supposed to have been a prelude to the 140-pound belt-holders colliding.
It seems like a natural fight given that both are elite junior welterweights and hold major titles. And just as importantly, both boxers are advised by Al Haymon.
But when Barry Hunter, the trainer/manager of Peterson is asked about that potential match-up, he told BoxingScene.com:
"Again, we've always been hopeful about that fight but I'm not sure. I hear the rumors about Danny moving up to '47 and I know a lot of people are moving up, moving down in weight. So I'm not sure."
Both Garcia and Peterson are part of a long list of fighters advised by Haymon that are still awaiting their next assignment.
For now, Peterson, who defended his IBF crown successfully against Edgar Santana in his last outing, will be staying put in this weight class.
"As it stands now, 140, yes," confirmed Hunter."But I guess in the next one or two(fights), it depends on if there's no other names at '40 or if Lamont starts to struggle with weight, then we'll have to plan on moving. But I definitely think that's something he wants to do because the names are at 147."
