Los Angeles – Below, please find a statement from PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien regarding the World Boxing Council’s “Money Belt,” which was made out of crocodile skin and will be given to the winner of Saturday’s boxing match at T-Mobile Arena:
"While boxers choose to enter the ring and fight, crocodiles and other animals killed for their skin simply want to be left alone, and PETA is calling on World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman never to use animal skins as prizes again. No crocodile should be bludgeoned, cut open, or skinned alive to hang in a boxer’s trophy room—or for any other reason."
The World Boxing Council announced a few days ago that Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor weren't just fighting for money in the boxing spectacle of the summer. The winner would also get The Money Belt.
The World Boxing Council created the special prize for this weekend's 154-pound showdown, which isn't actually for any real WBC championship.
Instead, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman on Wednesday revealed the gloriously blingy Money Belt , which is studded with 3,360 diamonds, 600 sapphires, 300 emeralds and 1 1/2 kilograms of 24-karat gold on green Italian alligator leather.
Sulaiman grinningly showed off the Money Belt and Mayweather posed for photos with it after a news conference for Saturday's show.
The WBC also created a similarly shiny monstrosity for Mayweather's 2015 bout with Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather was a longtime WBC champion before his retirement.
