The former of trainer of Miguel Cotto has a new Puerto Rican pupil in Prichard Colon. Diaz feels Team Colon is coming together and that they will have a future Puerto Rican champion on their hands.
“We have a team that’s real force,” Diaz told BoxingScene.com. “So we’ll sit down with the team and we’ll see where his future lies. But Puerto Rico is a proud island and at the moment there’s only one champion but soon it will return to being an island of champions.”
Diaz is the former trainer of Miguel Cotto before his exodus to Freddie Roach after his loss to Austin Trout. Diaz has no beefs with his former fighter and feels his career is in the right hands. He also feels Freddie Roach is the right guy to be in his corner and feels he will be the difference in a Canelo Alvarez fight.
Both fighters have scheduled bouts in the coming months. Canelo will face James Kirkland on May 9th in Texas, while Cotto is heading in the direction of a fight with Daniel Geale on June 6th. Should both of them win, HBO would like to match them against each other in the fall.
“Miguel is an excellent boxer,” Diaz said of his former pupil. “I think Miguel is an extraordinary fighter and an extraordinary person and he has the best corner in the game right now with Freddie Roach. I think the best corner will take him to new levels in victory over Canelo.”
