Cameron Dunkin, manager of former WBC and WBO middleweight king Kelly Pavlik (36-2, 32 KOs), outlined what is on the landscape for Pavlik, who will be released from an alcohol rehabilitation facility on Tuesday. The 28-year-old resident of Youngstown, Ohio, will be released on Tuesday from the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., after having been admitted for an alcohol problem on Nov. 4.
Promoted by Top Rank Promotions, Pavlik has been troubled by the alcohol issues since shortly after dethroning Jermain Taylor by seventh-round knockout in Atlantic City in September of 2007.
According to Dunkin, it's not a lock that Pavlik will resume his career. Nothing has been discussed and Dunkin doesn't plan to place any pressure on the fighter. He wants Pavlik to rest and make a decision when the time is right.
"This is about Kelly. That's all that we care about right now. He just needs some time, and then we'll see what he wants to do or if he even wants to fight. Who knows, he may want to just call it a day," said Dunkin. "I don't know what he wants to do and I don't think that even Kelly knows what he wants to do. I don't want to put any pressure on him. I just want him to relax. But Kelly really just needs and wants to get his live in order, believe me."
