Bob Arum popped up on the Steve Bunce show today and spoke about a mooted showdown between WBC super middleweight king Carl Froch and middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik. The fight could take place in 2010, and would be a showdown between the only two men to have defeated Jermain Taylor, the man who many believed would be the next big thing in world boxing.
Pavlik is currently hoping to grab a fight against WBA title holder Felix Sturm, if he can tempt Sturm out of his European lair. Arum confirmed that "Top Rank has discussed that fight [Froch-Pavlik] and yesterday we met with HBO and talked about Pavlik fighting Felix Sturm later this year, and Pavlik fighting Froch as early as January of next year [2010]."
In the meantime both men will have to keep on winning. The proposed fight would be a blue-collar clash between two men who have an agricultural approach to the sport. Froch is never shy of dishing out punishment; Pavlik is a come forward aggressor; both fighters can take a shot, or ten.
Froch is in the form of his life, destroying Jermain Taylor with just seconds remaining in his last fight. Pavlik is struggling for form following his boxing lesson at the hands of Bernard Hopkins. If Froch and Pavlik meet the tagline could be 'No one will run, no one will hide', fireworks will be a certainty.
