WBO/WBC middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik is confident that his power will be a factor in the fight with Paul Williams on December 5. Pavlik says the possibility of a knockout win is very good. He says Williams is a very active puncher who throws a lot of punches per round. He wants to see how Williams reacts when just as many punches are coming back.
"The possibility [of knocking Williams out] is very good, with my power and my workrate. My style of fighting is that I wear fighters down. I throw a lot of punches a round. Williams never really fought a guy like that other than Margarito and Margarito is really a 147/154-pounder. Let's see how he reacts to it," Pavlik told BoxingScene.com's Bill Emes.
"He just punches in bunches. We just have to be in tip-top shape to counter. The question is going to be, what's going to happen in the later rounds, if the fight goes to the later rounds, and I catch him. What's he going to do when he has a natural middleweight hitting you on your shoulders, your stomach and your head. What's he going to do when someone else is throwing back 80 to 90 punches a round. How is he going to stand up to that? That's going to be the question of the fight."
Pavlik tells BoxingScene that Williams is not much of a boxer/mover and he tend sto throw wide shots. After being dominated last year by Bernard Hopkins, Pavlik feels the pressure to prove himself to the boxing public. He says a win over Williams will still leave a lot to prove.
"He throws wide punches. Margarito exposed that and started to catch him with right hands. In the fight with Winky Wright, Wright can't really break an egg. If you watch that last fight with Williams, he caught Williams and Williams got a little shook up on that one punch. So we have to see how he adapts," Pavlik said.
"A dominant performance will still leave a lot to prove. One thing that can happen, is when I go in there and dominate Williams, a lot of people will probably say 'he was a welterweight, blown-up welterweight, blown-up junior middleweight.' We just need to be dominant in every fight and keep winning."
