According to the Pod Index, a statistics company based in Chicago that focuses on the performance of boxing and MMA judges, Pacquiao and Algieri have distinct advantages based on historical data. The Pod Index has analyzed each round that Pacquiao and Algieri has fought over the last five years.
Winning Rounds
Algieri wins 68% of rounds scored, with judges often disagreeing throughout the bout. Also of interest, he has had limited success winning the first two rounds. Pacquiao, on the other hand, is consistent throughout his fights, winning a steady 81% of rounds scored. Even though Pacquiao’s quality of opposition is superior, he has enjoyed more success than Algieri in the eyes of the judges.
Work-Rate
According CompuBox stats, Algieri does hold one notable advantage over Pacquiao, which may come into play depending on the judges’ style preferences. Algieri averages an unusually high work-rate of 90 punches per round, even though he faded in the final two rounds again¬¬¬st Provodnikov, averaging 65 per round. Pacquiao averages a more modest 66 punches thrown per round, again demonstrating consistency throughout the course of a fight.
Power Punching
Both fighters land about the same number of non-jabs per round (16). However, according to the Pod Index’s Power Index (a metric that measures the number of non-jabs landed in each round relative to the opponent) Pacquiao has a 70-62 advantage over Algieri.
Efficiency
When it comes to efficiency, Manny Pacquiao has a clear advantage over Chris Algieri. Manny lands 35% of his punches and only gets better as the fight progresses. Algieri lands 28% of punches thrown and dipped down to 20% in the final round of his last bout. The Pod Index also notes that Pacquiao’s Efficiency Index (a metric that calculates relative connect-percentage in each round) is 58 as compared to 53 for Algieri.
