Speaking with the Manila Bulletin, WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao welcomes the September clash between the returning Floyd Mayweather Jr. and WBC champion Victor Ortiz. Pacquiao faces Juan Manuel Marquez in a trilogy bout on November 12. Pacquiao is hoping that Mayweather comes through to set up a trilogy fight in 2012. The Filipino star believes what a few others have noted, that Mayweather picked Ortiz to prepare for a future showdown between the two of them.
“That’s good [regarding Mayweather-Ortiz],” Pacquiao told the Bulletin. “Ortiz is a southpaw like me so I think Mayweather is preparing [to get used to a lefthander]. If he gets past Ortiz [then we can fight].”
