The quibbling is over and Ring Magazine featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao has agreed to sign an amended addendum to his four-fight "Mother Contract" signed last March 1, 2004 with international promoter Murad Muhammad. The addendum merely puts down the specific details of two of the fights under the contract signed by Pacquiao and business manager Rod Nazario in which Murad holds the promotional rights for four fights with a minimum guarantee of a purse of $500,000. It was noted that Murad’s offer of $900,000 to fight Marquez and $1.750 million to face Erik Morales is way above the amount stipulated in the contract.

In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard, Murad agreed to a proposal from a respected lawyer and well-known boxing authority removing the phrase "or a credible opponent" which Pacquiao had objected to and instead replaced it with "an opponent acceptable to HBO." Pacquiao, who discussed the change with Viva Sports/Manila Standard in a telephone conversation from his home in Davao City said "its okay. I will sign the addendum." Pacquiao said that since it was "difficult to get a flight out of Davao" to have the signed document hand-carried to Manila he would "go downtown and have it faxed" to the Wild Card Gym of Nazario in BF Homes, Paranaque.

Pacquiao who missed his scheduled flight to Davao on Wednesday morning because he played billiards overnight until late morning promised he would "begin training" yesterday in an earnest effort to get into top shape, knowing that Marquez has been training at an altitude of 10,000 feet for the past month. Pacquiao earlier told a news conference at a birthday reception hosted by Mayor Pedro Acharon in his hometown of General Santos City last Thursday "people are trying to scare me by telling me about Marquez training for so long. But I am not afraid. With the people of General Santos and all my countrymen behind me, every punch I throw will have their power behind it."

The quibbling over the addendum prepared by Murad was an apparent result of confusion in Pacquiao’s mind caused by several people whispering into his ears which he himself admitted. Top HBO Sports executive Kery Davis and Murad explained that the reason for the words "or a credible opponent" in case either Marquez or Erik Morales who has been lined up to fight Pacquiao in late July, are unable to fight for any reason, was "to ensure that the fight date will not be lost and Pacquiao’s purse won’t be reduced." HBO was not prepared to keep the February and July dates available and the purse intact if Marquez or Morales didn’t fight Pacquiao and the opponent was a fighter not a "credible opponent" because HBO was putting up big money.

With the misunderstanding out of the way following Murad’s willingness to make the necessary changes, Pacquiao’s focus is expected to now center on getting into his sharpest form in preparation for Marquez. As a result it is expected that Pacquiao will heed the advice of trainer Freddie Roach and leave for the US shortly after the holiday season to begin intense training for the much-awaited February 26 rematch. His wife Jinkee who celebrates her birthday on January 12 said she could celebrate her birthday without her husband and disclosed he wanted Pacquiao to leave for LA on December 28 because "this is an important fight for him and for all of us and Marquez is already training."
