Featherweight boxer Oscar Gonzalez has been declared brain dead Sunday in Mexico, less than 24 hours following a 10th round knockout loss to Jesus Galicia in their Televisa-televised main event Saturday evening in Mexico City.
Gonzalez was rushed to the hospital immediately following his loss to Galicia, in what was a billed as a WBC silver featherweight title fight. The fighter is currently being kept alive only through the aid of machines, with his family to arrive from Tepic on Sunday afternoon before the fighter is officially pronounced dead.
Gonzalez is just 23 years young. The featherweight held a ring record of 23-3 (14KO) and was in the midst of a three-fight win streak prior to Saturday evening. The run included an upset points win over former 122 lb. titlist Rico Ramos last April.
