Mongolia as a whole is enjoying its best Olympic season ever. The entire nation sent over a mere 29 competitors in seven sports, and is guaranteed at least five medals in this year's competition.
Thanks the mighty efforts of an unlikely success story, they are now a win away from Olympic Gold.
Tugstsogt Nyambayar is in the midst of a historic run. The Mongolian flyweight scored his third consecutive upset, this time taking out the division's top seed in a 15-11 upset of defending world amateur champion Misha Aloyan of Russia.
Neither fighter offered much offense at any point in the competition, as each seemed to share a similar strategy of waiting for the other to make a mistake. It turned to play right into Nyambayar's hands, as he built up an early lead which he never relinquished.
Aloyan sought to overcome the slight deficit, but in trying to pick up the pace left himself wide open for Nyambayar's counter punches. The strategy played well all the way to the finish line, with the close but clear victory giving Nyambayar his third straight win over a seeded opponent.
There was no major shakeup in determining Nyambayar's opponent. Robeisy Ramirez may have been the lower ranked fighter in his semifinal bout with Ireland's Michael Conlan, but the Cuban removed all doubt as to who was the better fighter in a 20-10 rout.
Ramirez, just 18-years old, did whatever he wanted against the determined but outgunned Irish fighter. A sizable lead early on proved insurmountable, with Ramirez adding a standing-eight count just for insurance.
Cuba now has two fighters in the finals, with Ramirez joining light welterweight Roniel Iglesias. The boxing powerhouse has a slim chance of a third shot, but would require Yasniel Toledo finding a way to bump off Ukraine superstar Vasyl Lomachenko, arguably the best amateur fighter in the world regardless of weight class.
Mongolia only has one shot at Gold, resting on the mighty shoulders of
Tugstsogt Nyambayar. Beating Iglesias is no easy feat - but then, neither were the three wins Nyambaya wasn't supposed to post in making it to this point.
The flyweight finals take place Sunday, August 12.
