(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Forty of the nation’s top boxers moved one step closer to earning a 2011 National Golden Gloves title with a quarterfinal victory on Thursday night at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. Thursday’s victors advanced to the semifinal round, which will be contested on Friday night.
Flyweight Louie Byrd (Denver, Colo.) is vying for his fourth National Golden Gloves title in Indianapolis, and once again at a new weight class. Byrd previously won championships at the 106, 108, and 112 pound weight divisions and is now boxing at the current flyweight division of 114 pounds. He advanced to the semifinals with a victory over USA Boxing National Team Member Adam Lopez (San Antonio, Texas). Multi-time super heavyweight national champion Lenroy “Cam” Thompson (Lenexa, Kansas) joined Byrd in the semifinals with a quarterfinal victory over Trevor Bryan (Albany, N.Y.) in Thursday’s action.
Several medalists from the 2010 USA Boxing National Championships advanced on the 2011 National Golden Gloves medal round with wins on Thursday night. Light welterweight silver medalist Michael Reed (Waldorf, Md.) claimed a quarterfinal victory over Javonn Barnes (Muskegon, Mich.) while welterweight silver medalist Alex Martin (Chicago, Ill.) defeated Anthony Gangemi (Mine Hill, N.J.) in their quarterfinal showdown to earn a berth in the semifinal round. Middleweight silver medalist Jesse Hart (Philadelphia, Pa.) moved on to the semifinals with a win over Leandre White (Detroit, Mich.) in quarterfinal action. Light heavyweight bronze medalist Caleb Plant (Ashland, Tenn.) advanced to semifinal action as well, defeating Craig Duncan (Apopka, Fla.) on Thursday night.
Semifinal action will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Indiana Convention Center with 20 bouts of action scheduled for the session.
