WBC Silver middleweight champion Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) says his trainer was one who came up with the idea of taping a photo of Gennady Golovkin’s face to the heavy bag in training camp. Murray admits he's already sick of staring at Golovkin's face on a day to day basis, but it's a method that his trainer previously used in other camps as well.
Murray will challenge Golovkin (31-0, 28KOs) for the WBA/IBO/WBC-interim middleweight championships in an HBO televised main event on February 21t at the Salle des Étoiles, in Monte Carlo.
Win or lose, Murray claims to be in the best shape of his career and weighed the lighter than expected at the WBC's 30-day weight check.
"We've put Golovkin’s face on the punch bag; it was my trainer Oliver Harrison’s idea! It’s something we've always done. There's been that many bags in the gym that have been Matthew Macklin and Darren Barker and then Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez; now it’s Golovkin. It’s there every day when we go; I'm sick of the sight of his face to be honest," Murray wrote in his Daily Mail column.
"I did my 30-day check weight last week and at 169lb, it's the lightest I've ever weighed in for it. I was only a pound over my seven-day check weight so I'm flying. It helps over here with the weather; when it's nice outside you want to go for a jog and eat healthily. Everything's in the best possible shape it can be."
