Mijares is Inching Closer To a Shot at The WBC Title

According to the World Boxing Council, Cristian Mijares is getting closer to a shot at the full WBC featherweight title. On Saturday in Mexico City, Mijares (47-6-2, 22KOs) captured the vacant WBC United States (USNBC) featherweight title with a ninth round technical knockout of veteran Rafael Marquez, who was favored to win.

The current champion is Daniel Ponce De Leon, also of Mexico. Mijares has now won eleven fights in a row since a three fight losing streak between 2008 and 2009. The streak of impressive wins is going to pay off. Mijares is expected to receive a good ranking within the WBC's top ten.

But, there does appear to be some confusion as to the weight and the exact WBC title at stake. Zanfer promotions reported each fighter coming in at 122-pounds, but other sources report that each fighter came in at 125.5 and fought for a featherweight title under the WBC.
