Julio César Chávez has the super featherweight world title defense record with 9 fights, while Miguel 'Alacrán' Berchelt already plans to reach that number and overcome it, as he wishes to enter the Hall of Fame as one of the greatest fighters ever to come out of Mexico.

Berchelt (37-1, 33 KOs) was in action back in November, when he retained his WBC super featherweight crown for the sixth time with a fourth round knockout of Jason Sosa.

"Chavez has the record of nine defenses, I would like to break his record. The man has by far been the greatest Mexican boxer of all time and records were made to be broken, as Julio Cesar himself has said, and I would like to be remembered as Miguel Berchelt, the best super featherweight of all-time in Mexico," Berchelt told La Verdad.

One of the fights that Berchelt wants to secure is a clash with Oscar Valdez.

Valdez, undefeated and former WBO featherweight champion, recently moved up to 130-pounds and specifically called for a fight with Berchelt.

Berchelt is hoping that fight can come together before the year is out.

"A very important fight has arrived at the door. We know that Oscar is a great fighter, he comes in after having five defenses of his belt and just invaded 130 pounds and, well, I am here as the reigning champion and hopefully it is a great fight. Without a doubt the real winner will be the audience that can attend and watch that fight in any arena in the United States or here in Mexico, because it will be an absolute war," Berchelt said.

Should he accomplish his goal of breaking Chavez's record, Berchelt would then move up to the lightweight limit of 135-pounds.
