On Friday night, lightweight contender John Molina scored a dramatic last minute victory over previously undefeated Mickey Bey in Showtime's main event from the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. Molina was down on all three scorecards but was able to hurt Bey and land an accumulation of punches that caused the referee to halt the fight.
BoxingScene caught up with a dejected Mickey Bey in the locker room as he felt the referee made a bad stoppage and interfered in the fight.
"Honestly I did what I was supposed to do as far as I'm concerned. Yeah of course it's boxing. He's going to land a couple good shots but for the ref to stop it is crazy to me. I landed plenty big ounches in the fight but everything I did [the referee] said 'don't do this, don't do that' the whole fight. Whatever his corner was over there saying to the ref, the referee warned me about everything. It threw me off a little bit," said Bey.
Molina caught Bey with a hard left hook in the last round that put him in a bad state and he never appeared to fully recover. Bey looked like he was oit on his feet but he disagreed and said he was aware the entire time and it felt like any other round for him.
It's a tough pill to swallow for Bey who decided to fight aggressively the last round despite being up on the cards and all he had to do was finish the fight. He reiterated his displeasure with the stoppage and felt Molina received a gift because of it.
"I would think [Molina] would say that because he knows he got a gift. I'd feel like that too. I can't take credit away from [Molina], he's not the referee but that fight was a gift. He knew he didn't have a chance at all. I just felt I waz fighting two people. Two or three people literally," said Bey.
