UFC superstar Conor McGregor has assured everyone that conditioning will not be a problem when he steps in the boxing ring for the first time, against five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs).
In his two fights with Nate Diaz in the UFC, McGregor clearly had fatigue issues in the later rounds and he's also slowed down in other fights that went the distance.
The contest with Mayweather is scheduled for twelve rounds, with ten ounce gloves at the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds. McGregor has no professional boxing experience and has been instantly tabbed as a mismatched underdog against a fighter regarded as one of the best defensive boxers in the history of the sport.
The Showtime Pay-Per-View fight Mayweather takes place on August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
McGregor has been sparring with several boxers, including two division champion Paulie Malignaggi, and reportedly he's not slowed down during eight round sparring sessions.
McGregor believes there will be less fatigue involved in a boxing match, because there is a lot less going on in terms of the physical action required.
“You’re talking about a 200-pound man there,” McGregor said. “You’re talking about grappling exchanges. You’re talking about elbows, knees, kicks. You’re talking about a hell of a different contest.
“A little boxing fight where there’s a referee to save the day every time there’s a tie-up and a clinch? Twelve three minutes is nothing. I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but this game is very easy. It’s a very easy game compared to my game.”
Mayweather captured world titles at super featherweight, lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight and junior middleweight. He retired from boxing back in September of 2015, after winning a twelve round decision over former world champion Andre Berto.
At the age of 40, Mayweather has promised that McGregor will be the final opponent of his career.
