Retired former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) was not impressed by last Saturday's performance from IBF, IBO, WBC, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs).
Golovkin was taken the twelve round distance for the first time in his career, when he won a close unanimous decision over mandatory challenger Daniel Jacobs (32-2, 29 KOs) at New York's Madison Square Garden.
The outcome snapped Golovkin's streak of 23 knockout victories and left many wondering if age is finally catching up to the 35 year old boxer.
There was a number of observers who felt Jacobs had done enough to get the win, and Mayweather was one of those observers. He does say Jacobs could have put in a more convincing performance to sway the judges in his direction.
“When I was overseas I seen another fighter fight and I thought he came up short. Ya’ll know who we’re talking about.... Triple L, because he lost three times to me. Triple G he can punch, he’s a good puncher. But I may need to train Danny Jacobs because Danny Jacobs.. he could have got the job done a lot better. I could have shown him how to get the job done a lot better. But Danny Jacobs put of a hell of a fight. He’s a hell of a fighter. Triple G is a hell of a fighter. It was a good matchup," Mayweather told Fighthype.com.
After watching that contest, Mayweather is even more confident that he would beat Golovkin in the ring. Golovkin has always stated that Mayweather is the only opponent that he would actually move down for. Golovkin is willing to fight Mayweather at the junior middleweight limit of 154, where the retired boxer once held the WBC, WBA world titles. Mayweather retired from boxing in September 2015.
At the moment, Mayweather is only willing to fight UFC superstar Conor McGregor.
"I came out of retirement for one fighter, and that's Conor McGregor. But if I was still active in the fight game, ya'll already know. I don't have to tell the fans what I would do. I'd put the work in on that boy. To me, it's all about the big money fights.. who is he?"
