Floyd Mayweather Sr., father and trainer of retired five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., would advise his son to reject the idea of a rematch with Manny Pacquiao (58-6-2, 38KOs).
Mayweather (49-0, 26KOs) retired from boxing last September after a twelve round decision over former world champion Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao also retired, back in April after a decision win in his third fight with Timothy Bradley, also at the MGM Grand. But a few months later Pacquiao was already planning a comeback, which got finalized for November 5th against WBO champion Jessie Vargas at Las Vegas' Thomas & Mack Center.
Pacquiao, should he win in November, plans to fight at least two more times next year. Mayweather is not planning to return, at the moment, but his father believes that he will indeed fight again, at least once, to get his record to 50-0.
The biggest money fight for Mayweather is a rematch with Pacquiao. Mayweather had few issues in winning a decision over Pacquiao last May. After the fight, Pacquiao blamed his performance on a pre-existing shoulder injury that got worse during their contest. Pacquiao had surgery a few days later and was out of action for the remainder of the year.
Floyd Sr. believes a rematch is not warranted in this situation. If they fought again, and Mayweather won again - Floyd Sr. says Pacquiao will claim another injury.
"I can’t really tell what’s gonna be happening right now, but Floyd beat Pacquiao real easy though. Sometimes when people beat you up and give you a good beating, you don’t have that same desire no more, and that could be it with Pacquiao," Mayweather Sr. told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
"If I was my son, I wouldn’t even give him another fight because he said lies about how my son won the fight. Talking about his arm, something wrong with arm, weren’t nothing wrong with his arm. Floyd clearly beat him, everybody saw that and everybody knows that. If they fight again, his arm gonna be hurt again, OK."
"After Floyd beat him I thought it would just be over. [My son] might wanna come back one day, but Pacquiao would get the same thing. It ain’t even worth trying."
