WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26KOs) sat down with BoxingScene.com and several other reporters to discuss his upcoming fight with Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18KOs) on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayweather talked about his training for last May's victory over Miguel Cotto, the record of Guerrero, and several other topics.
BoxingScene.com: Overtraining for Miguel Cotto
Mayweather: I'm thinking that's what it was for the Cotto fight, but I was making mistakes that I shouldn't have been making. I'm a better fighter. I wasn't the best Floyd Mayweather, but I'm not here to complain. I got the job done under any conditions.
BoxingScene.com: Thoughts on Guerrero saying he handpicks his opponents.
Mayweather: He was doing an interview and was like 'Mayweather handpicks his opponents' but then he says another time I'm a great fighter, so I must be a great handpicker. I earned my stripes to get to this point in my career, and I think that if I choose to pick and choose at this particular time - I feel that it's my prerogative.
BoxingScene.com: Thoughts on Guerrero's win over Berto.
Mayweather: I think that Andre Berto was going through a lot, after being off a year. Some fighters can take a long time off..like George Foreman, myself and other fighters...even Ishe [Smith] can take time off from the sport and still perform well. I think that Andre Berto is a guy who has to stay active.
"And I think any time you close both a guy's eyes, both of them, you're supposed to be able to finish him. And then Andre Berto was still able to close his eye after having two closed eyes. I look at certain things like that.
BoxingScene.com: Thoughts on Guerrero's resume.
Mayweather: Then I look at certain things like [Joel] Casamayor going the distance with him at the age of [39]. You have to look at certain things like that and say is this guy on the same level as a Floyd Mayweather? You ask yourself those certain questions. That's what you have to ask yourself.
Or having a dogfight with [Michael] Katsidis, and then you've got guys like [Juan Manuel] Marquez knocking Katsidis out. I just look at that and that's how I weigh certain situations by looking at certain situations.
BoxingScene.com: Thoughts on Berto
Mayweather: I think Berto's a good fighter, but I don't think he has the movement of a Floyd Mayweather. He don't use the angles I move. I don't think his resume is like mine.
BoxingScene.com: Comparing his last opponent against the last opponent of Guerrero.
Mayweather: You ask yourself is Andre Berto a better fighter than Miguel Cotto? Ask yourself that question. Do you think Andre Berto can go the distance with Miguel Cotto? Absolutely not. These are just true words and I'm not saying he's not a good fighter, but he won't be able to go the distance with a Miguel Cotto. Not a Miguel Cotto that's in top shape like he was when he faced me.
