UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor took a tongue lashing from former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs).
Mayweather, 39-years-old, retired from boxing in September 2015 but was recently considering a bout with McGregor. The two fighters were going back and forth through social media for weeks. Nothing ever happened and any talk of them meeting disappeared overnight. In recent weeks, the two fighters have started mentioning each other once again.
McGregor made UFC history last Saturday night at New York's Madison Square Garden, after knocking out Eddie Alvarez to become the first fighter to hold two UFC titles in two weight divisions.
McGregor's trash talking, ability to create headlines, ability to generate money and pay-per-view buys - has drawn comparisons to Mayweather from the mainstream media - who call him "the Floyd Mayweather of MMA."
Mayweather rejects those comparisons, stating that McGregor is not in the same universe when you compare their careers or bank accounts.
"I didn't know Conor McGregor was undefeated. I didn't know Conor McGregor had a reign in MMA for 20 years and had world titles in five different weight classes. That's something I had done. So I guess you guys are telling me something new, I mean if you’re saying he’s the Floyd Mayweather of the MMA, I’m trying to find out. Have you ever made $300 million in one night? Have you ever made $100 million in one night? Have you ever made $70 million in one night?," Mayweather told TMZ Sports.
"So as far as you wanna say he’s the Floyd Mayweather of the MMA ... I mean, I mean it’s okay to just say it, it’s not true. Never compare Conor McGregor to me, it's a total disrespect. Once again, I'm an elephant. An elephant don't beef with ants. An elephant is so large he don't see ants."
During a recent appearance on Fox Sports 1 - UFC President Dana White made it clear that he would approve a fight between Mayweather and McGregor - but not as a boxing match, because a straight up boxing match would make it a very uneven contest that won't exactly be marketable. He even suggested that both men should wear MMA gloves instead of boxing gloves - to make the contest a little more balanced.
"I would [bless] it. I would start [the rules] with punches, kicks and elbows though. You don't want to box Floyd Mayweather ... not straight up boxing. [McGregor is] good with his hands, but Mayweather is a different level. But Conor is a lot bigger than Mayweather though and Conor does hit hard. It's interesting. You can't say its not interesting. Do they wear boxing gloves or do they wear MMA gloves? You can't favor Floyd too much [with the fight rules]. You've got to balance it," White said.
