Amir Khan (28-3, 19KOs) is appearing to be, as the days go by, the most likely candidate to face WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26KOs) on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The other frontrunner to face Mayweather is WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31KOs). Maidana's team made a statement to the Argentine press that Mayweather's team have never contracted them to discuss a fight - at least not yet.

"In the past hours there have been some rumors about a possible unification fight between WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and WBA welterweight, Marcos Maidana, on 3 May, and we want to clarify that we have not been contacted in this regard, except for the imaginative piece of digital art posted by Mayweather himself on social networks, which has already been answered by the Chino Maidana (aka "the biscuit", in this case)."

"El Chino Maidana is enjoying his well deserved vacation in his hometown of Margarita and will not be begging for that fight. And, unlike others, Chino will not discredit any of his boxer colleagues who could also be candidates to face the best in the world. We believe that people have already ruled on what kind of fight they want to watch on the 3rd of May: a fight between two champions."

Mayweather is expected to announced his next opponent by the end of January.
