Former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) is standing firm on his position of only considering one opponent for a potential ring return - and that man still remains as UFC superstar Conor McGregor.
Mayweather, 40-years-old, retired in September 2015 after a dominating decision win over former world champion Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
“Do I believe the fight is gonna happen? I really don’t know as of right now,” Mayweather said to Stephen Smith on is radio show. “Me and my side, we’re ready to go. As soon as they sign on the dotted line, then it’s time to go to training camp.
“Ready to go for me is, ‘hey Floyd, he signed.’ That’s’ when I go back to do my road work, go back to chopping trees, go back to the boxing gym, go back to my zone."
Mayweather said he was coming out of retirement back in March, but only for a fight with McGregor. But it appears the negotiations to make this cross-sports contest is dragging out much longer than expected/
"Only thing I can do is have patience like I did before. No one thought the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would happen but I had patience. So we must have patience. Take our time and just wait. Do I believe a fight is going to happen? I really don't know right now. But me and my side we are ready to go. So as soon as they say let's sign on the dotted line, then it's time to go to training camp."
Mayweather said he understands that part of the holdup with the fight is that McGregor has a baby due at the end of May, and after the baby is born, then "we'll go from there."
“Only thing I can do is have patience like I had before,” Mayweather said. “No one thought the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would happen, but I had patience. So we must have patience, take our time, and just wait.”
Mayweather also made it clear that McGregor must realize that he's the B-side of the deal and has no pull to call of the financial shots in their discussions.
“You have to work your way to become the A-side. Like I said before, in the UFC, he is the A-Side. But, this is Mayweather Promotions, coming together with UFC and we’re working together. The reason why we’re the A-side is because of the numbers, we look at the numbers, our pay-per-view numbers, his pay-per-view numbers, and our pay-per-view numbers, there’s no comparison," Mayweather said.
“As far as guaranteed purses, his largest guarantee from what I was told was $3 million, no more than $5 million dollars.”
