As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, UFC star Conor McGregor took another step toward making a fight with five division world champion Floyd Mayweather by applying for a professional boxing license in Nevada..
Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Bob Bennett told ESPN that McGregor submitted his application last Thursday but it lacked medical documents necessary to consider the request.
"When he has time, and all sides have come to a contractual agreement, I'm sure he will fulfill our requirements and we look forward to having him fight in Nevada," Bennett said.
The fight has fallen under a lot of criticism, with Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya calling on fans to boycott the fight.
Tomorrow on Eminem’s SiriusXM channel Shade 45, an exclusive interview with Mayweather will air on DJ Whoo Kid’s Whoolywood Shuffle. During the interview, Mayweather and Whoo Kid discuss a potential boxing match with McGregor.
"I mean, once I get back to Las Vegas, to my hub, we’ll find out how everything plays out. You know, I’ll communicate with Al [Haymon]. I’ll communicate with Leonard Ellerbe. We’ll sit down and see what we can come up with and hopefully the McGregor fight can be made. This is a boxing match, he’s a hell of a stand up fighter, I can’t take that away from him," Mayweather said.
"Only time McGregor has been defeated was when he was on the ground. When he was standing up, he always was victorious. He’s a power puncher, he’s a tough competitor, I’m a tough competitor, and we have to go out there and give the world and the fans what they want to see: excitement."
The interview with Mayweather airs in its entirety on Eminem’s SiriusXM channel Shade 45 (channel 45 on satellite radios and on the SiriusXM app) tomorrow, Saturday, May 27, between noon and 6 pm ET.
McGregor, who already has a license to fight in California, says he has agreed to terms with the UFC for a potential boxing match against 40-year-old Mayweather, who called it quits in 2015 after going 49-0 with 26 knockouts, hanging up his gloves as the welterweight king.
McGregor, a 28-year-old Irishman, is the top pay-per-view draw in UFC.
Las Vegas sportsbooks already are taking thousands of dollars in bets on a Mayweather-McGregor fight even though no deal for the bout has been completed with Mayweather's camp nor a date or site finalized.
