Retired pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. is very interested in eventually putting together a super middleweight unification between WBC champion Badou Jack and IBF champion James DeGale.
Mayweather's promotional company handles Jack, while DeGale is promoted by Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport and advised by Al Haymon, who also advises Mayweather.
The fight won't happen in the future it appears. Jack (20-1, 12KOs) might be heading into a very lucrative fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in April. DeGale has a mandatory defense due of his title, against Jose Uzcategui.
If they keep winning, which Mayweather expects, he says a showdown will indeed eventually go down.
There has been trash talking between the two fighters. At first, DeGale tore Jack apart and stated that he would destroy him easily. After Jack defeated George Groves last September, DeGale seemed to gain more respect for his skills and took back some of his past comments. He admitted that Jack was much better than previously stated.
Mayweather spoke with DeGale recently in Los Angeles. The hot topic of discussion was a unification with Jack.
"James DeGale is a very, very good fighter and he is solid. I like him. A lot of personality. The ultimate goal is for him and Badou to fight in a unification bout. Do I think that can happen? Absolutely," Mayweather told BBC.
"He talked to me the other day when I was in Los Angeles at the fights. He said he would like to fight Badou Jack. And it's something that I learnt early on in my career. I wanted to fight everybody. But everything takes time."
"Eventually it will happen. If he continues to win and Badou continues to win, which I truly believe both will, the ultimate goal is to match those two in a super bout, down the line."
