WBC middleweight Diamond champion Sergio Martinez and his supporters have been clamoring for some huge fights and I simply asked trainer Pablo Sarmiento if he felt his fighter had done enough in recent times to be looked at as the world’s premier fighter.
“Yes, absolutely,” he stated. “He keeps demonstrating it time and time again and he’s just getting started. Definitely we are looking for the big fights like [Floyd] Mayweather and [Manny] Pacquiao and hopefully those fights happen for him.”
Some would prefer for Martinez to look for bigger challenges such as IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute or WBC light heavyweight king Bernard Hopkins, yet fights with Mayweather and Pacquiao are where the money is at. I finished up our talk by asking Sarmiento who, between Floyd and Manny, would likely give Martinez his toughest fight.
“Probably the toughest fight would be with Mayweather but then again it would probably be Mayweather’s toughest fight as well. It would be a great fight, a good fight for the public to see.”
