International promoter/adviser Sampson Lewkowicz informed BoxingScene.com that Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27KOs), the WBC's Diamond champion, is still targeting the WBC's middleweight king Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (43-0, 30KOs) for the first quarter of 2012.
Despite reports to the contrary, Martinez has Chavez's name at the top of his list. He still plans to sit ringside at Chavez's next fight, which takes place on November 19th against Peter Manfredo Jr. at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas. And he still plans to confront Chavez after the fight.
"Sergio still wants to fight Chavez Jr. in early 2012, as ordered by the WBC. If Chavez wins, and does not intend to fight Martinez, then he needs to do the right thing and give up the title. Martinez will gladly enter the ring, take the belt from Chavez, shake his hand, and there won't be any hard feelings," Lewkowicz told BoxingScene.com
Additionally, Lewkowicz disputed any and all rumors regarding ongoing negotiations with Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a mid-2012 showdown.
"I don't know where this came from. This is absolutely not true. It's nothing more than a rumor," Lewkowicz said.
