MGM Grand, Las Vegas - Four division champion Juan Manuel Marquez was front and center in Las Vegas to do Spanish commentary on ESPN Deportes for Floyd Mayweather's dominant victory over Robert Guerrero. Marquez, who lost to Mayweather in 2009, was very impressed with Mayweather but also said that Guerrero is a good fighter and that there is no shame in losing to Mayweather.
"Mayweather dominated the fight like I thought he would. Guerrero is a good fighter - It is just that Mayweather is on a different level," Marquez reasoned.
In December Marquez finally was able to settle the score in his rivalry with Manny Pacquiao. The fight ended abruptly courtesy of a vicious one punch knockout. Marquez went 0-2-1 in their first three fights but many fans and insiders alike felt that Marquez deserved to get the nod in at least one of those fights.
Last year Marquez enlisted the services of controversial strength and conditioning coach Angel "Memo" Heredia to assist him in the training for the fourth Pacquiao fight. I asked Marquez for this thoughts now that many other fighters such as Jean Pascal, Brandon Rios and BJ Flores have turned to Heredia to help them with their training.
"I think that Memo Heredia does really good work so you see that other fighters want to work with him. He is a great physical trainer and he has great results so other people want to train with him. I am happy for him," stated Marquez.
Marquez is currently slated to face WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley in either September or October. When asked if he would welcome a rematch with Floyd Mayweather down the line, Marquez shut the door on that possibility.
"I don't want to fight him again because everyone saw what happened in 2009 and I think it's better if he goes his way and I go mine," Marquez said while referring to his one-sided loss to Mayweather that took place on September 19th, 2009.
