Former champion Antonio Margarito is training and staying shape while his lawyers are trying to overturn the February decision by the California State Athletic Commission, which revoked the fighter's license for a year. Margarito was found liable for a plaster-like substance found in his handwraps prior to the January 24 bout with Shane Mosley.
If his lawyers are able to win, Margarito would like to return in the United States but Top Rank has told him that fight in Tijuana, Mexico is more likely in September or October, with Carlos Baldomir still being named as a possible opponent.
Margarito was dominated and stopped by Shane Mosley back in January. There were rumors that Margarito struggled to make weight for that fight. Against Cotto last July, Margarito chopped Cotto down for a knockout win but the handwraps scandal has raised doubts over the win. He would like to rematch Cotto to set the record straight.
"Essentially I will try to get Shane Mosley to give me the rematch, and also I desire to fight again with Miguel Cotto - to confirm that I am better than him. With Cotto, I beat him in July of last year, and I'm in a position to give him the rematch," Margarito told ESTO. "Mosley beat me and I don't have any excuse, but that night I was not 100%. In a rematch I want to show that I can beat him. I do recognize that he is a great boxer."
