As reported several days ago, former world champion Antonio Margarito (38-8, 27KOs) is back in training and seriously considering the possibility of a comeback at either junior middleweight or middleweight, after 42 months of retirement.
Margarito was forced to retire due to an injury to his right eye, which was severely damaged during his decision loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2010.
He tried to return to the ring a year later, in a rematch with Miguel Cotto, and the injured eye began to swell up within a few rounds and forced the ringside physician to pull him from the fight in the ninth round.
After being evaluated medically, Margarito says his right eye is now 100% and he believes that he can still make a statement at age 37.
Margarito would like to get Cotto in the ring for a third time. Margarito stopped Cotto the first time around, but questions were raised if the victory was legitimate after illegal inserts were found in Margarito's hand wraps prior to a 2009 fight with Shane Mosley.
"The most important thing for me is that my eye is good and I already got the nod [from my doctor to return]. I have been doing very good training with Raul Robles and personally I'm having a good time. I have gotten the urge after witnessing the low level of Cotto opponents. They say Cotto hits like a beast, that's a lie. I'll keep saying that he hits like a girl. They say that now that he's with Roach he's become a monster...then give me a fight and prove it," Margarito told Univision.
