Former two division champion Paulie Malignaggi has denied the allegations that he was a spy for Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Malignaggi, who retired from boxing earlier this year, was hired as a sparring partner by Conor McGregor, to help the UFC fighter prepare for the scheduled battle with Mayweather. McGregor, a two division champion in the UFC, was making his professional boxing debut.
This past Saturday night, the MMA fighter was stopped in ten rounds by Mayweather. Malignaggi, as part of the Showtime broadcast team, was sitting ringside at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
McGregor and Malignaggi had a bad falling out, after Malignaggi became enraged after members of McGregor's team released images of their second sparring session on social media.
A few days prior to McGregor's fight, a video began to circulate which showed Malignaggi hanging out with Mayweather at his Las Vegas gym.
In the video, Mayweather dropped hints that Malignaggi was working for him as a double-agent. Members of McGregor's team, the fighter's aftermath, made claims that Malignaggi provided information to Mayweather.
Malignaggi claims the video was nothing more than his way to have some fun - as payback for the images and videos that were released by McGregor's team members. He says McGregor's "groupies" quickly created their own conclusions.
“We were just catching up and joking around,” Malignaggi said to MMA Hour. “Just having a good time. He was in very, very good spirits. You wouldn’t even realize it was fight week for him if you didn’t know him.”
“You think Floyd really needs the game plan to beat Conor McGregor? I mean, did you think Floyd had any other game plan besides just bringing the bitch out of him? Floyd’s only game plan was bringing the bitch out of him, that’s it.”
“The irony is that people jump to conclusions and they jumped to the wrong conclusion about this. Didn’t they jump to the wrong conclusion about my sparring pictures and the sparring videos he put out? I said, ‘That’s ironic.’ That’s ironic that these bum groupies fall for it every single time.”
