Luke Campbell got his World Championship campaign up and running in Baku on Tuesday with a polished performance to defeat home fighter Rahim Najafov and move into the last 32 in the bantamweight division.

And on an encouraging day for the Great Britain camp after Charlie Edwards' disappointing defeat on Monday, Welshman and reigning European champion Andrew Selby was also victorious.

Campbell's draw against Najafov - seeded eight despite not being ranked inside the world top 50 - raised some concerns in light of recent allegations made against the host nation.

But Hull's former European champion produced a slick, dazzling performance to silence a crowd made up mostly of Azeri soldiers who had been bussed into the arena to cheer on their man.

Campbell said: "I'm relieved to get over the first hurdle, especially against the local boxer. I expected a tough fight because I knew he was a tough opponent, but I kept my cool and executed my game plan."

Meanwhile Selby, still on a high from his superb continental triumph earlier this year, advanced in the flyweight division after a virtuoso performance gave him a 28-16 win over Hesham Abdelaal of Egypt.

Selby said: "I gave a few more away than I would have liked but I felt good. The Egyptian was strong and came at me for three rounds but I just tried to be sharp and show my speed."

Meanwhile Belfast flyweight Michael Conlon got the Irish challenge off to a fine start with an accomplished 17-8 win over reigning European bronze medallist Alexander Riscan of Moldova.
