Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas - The plan appears to be on schedule. Two-time Olympic gold medal winner Vasyl Lomachenko (1-0, 1KO) will get the opportunity to challenge for a world title on January 25th at The Theater in New York's Madison Square Garden. The talented boxer made his pro debut on Saturday night, where he stopped seasoned fighter Jose Ramirez (24-3, 15KOs) in the fourth round. Ramirez was down twice from hard shots to the body.
The plan, even prior to his debut, was to match him against the winner of Orlando Salido vs. Orlando Cruz, which took place on the same event for the vacant WBO featherweight championship. Salido (40-12-2, 28KOs) knocked Cruz (20-3-1, 10KOs) out in the seventh round to capture the belt.
"Now we look forward to January 25th in the Big Apple, where Vasyl Lomachenko and his team will try to realize their dream of winning a world title. They said to me before they started out, that they wanted to fight for a world title in their first fight. Under the rules, that was not possible. So I told them to fight a top contender, and if they beat a top contender then I would arrange a world title fight in the second fight, which would be in Madison Square Garden on January 25th. One of the great things about fighting in New York is there are many thousands of Ukrainians," Arum said.
