Leo Santa Cruz wants to be known as the best junior featherweight in the world. WBA/WBO champion Guillermo Rigondeaux is currently regarded as the best and even though Rigondeaux's promoter Top Rank doesn't currently do business with Santa Cruz's promoter Golden Boy, Santa Cruz said that he would love to get a shot at the Cuban.
He said that he has absolutely no issues in facing Rigondeaux who has had difficulty securing big fights since beating Nonito Donaire last April. Santa Cruz went as far as to say that he would be willing to face the two-time Olympic gold medalist in his next ring appearance after his showdown with Cristian Mijares on Saturday.
"They say if I want to beat the best I have to beat him. I have heard that he is saying I am scared of him but I am not scared of him. We have the promoter issues but if my manager and promoter can make the fight I will fight him. If it was up to me I would fight him whenever. If he leaves his promoter or if they can make an agreement then I will fight him whenever he wants," Santa Cruz stated.
The undefeated Santa Cruz finished our conversation by even revealing what game plan he would use if the fight were to come to fruition.
"The way I would fight him is to apply pressure and not give him no distance because that is how he fights. If you give him distance he is a great fighter and throws big punches but if you go after him he just runs and moves and isn't the same. You can't let him breathe," Santa Cruz told BoxingScene.com.
