WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee has promised to punish undefeated Billy Joe Saunders over his recent controversial comments that he made with respect to women becoming professional boxers.
Lee, a 2004 Olympian, makes a mandatory defense against Saunders, a 2008 Olympian, at Thomond Park on September 19. Promoters expect over 30,000 fans to attend the show.
Saunders told sportsjoe.ie that: “I think women are there for sex every night, hard sex,” when talk turned to Ireland’s Katie Taylor, a female boxer. Women are there for cleaning, cooking, washing and sex. They're not there to put headgear on and get punched in the face.”
Lee said the statements where immature and foolish, and asked for women everywhere to tune in and watch a painful lesson.
“It was an immature and foolish comment that he made publicly," said Lee to Irish Boxing. “I will make sure he feels immature and foolish on fight night. I urge all the women who have been offended by him to sit back and enjoy the painful lesson I will give him on your behalf.”
