Luis DeCubas Jr., manager of WBA 'regular' junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12KOs), spoke with BoxingScene.com, about the three appointed judges for the upcoming fight with Mexican superstar, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (43-1-1, 31KOs), which is scheduled to take place on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. DeCubas also commented on a recent article where Golden Boy Promotions Vice President, Eric Gomez, made it clear that his company is not favoritism to either side in the contest.
On Golden Boy VP Statements on Lara
"Like I said before, Golden Boy has been a pleasure to deal with through the years. I'm very happy that Eric came out to Lara's defense and stating that either way there is no favorite for them and Golden boy will be happy with either fighter winning this fight. I know personally that a lot of Golden Boy employees feel the same way and I have expressed this to Lara."
On Thoughts Regarding Judge Levi Martinez's Mexican Heritage.
"Levi Martinez's credibility and experience has never crossed my mind. He calls it how he sees it his resume speaks for itself. I do not feel that him being Mexico will play a factor in the fight. His reputation, like I said before, is second to none and I know he will call a fair fight. He's a very honorable man. From his past scorecards for example he had Lomenchenko beating Salido, a fighter from Mexico. So if it didn't play a factor there or in past fights it won't be a factor now.
Thoughts Regarding Jerry Roth and Dave Morreti Judging Canelo's Last Fight and if That Will Be a Factor.
Mr. Roth and Mr. Morreti are not only the two of the best judges in Las Vegas but in the world. They both have been judging fights before Lara and Canelo were even born so I'm not worried about that at all. Clean boxing is clean boxing, ring generalship counts for a lot in this sport and that's what you will see on July 12. Lara will win rounds and he will be given credit for them I'm sure of it. We are very happy with these Hall of fame judges. Very happy.
On The Crowd Playing a Factor on The Scoring.
"Now that would worry me if it wasn't for the experience of these judges. Sometimes the crowd noise does play a factor but I think its pretty obvious that Canelo will have a big fan base there and the judges know that and fans tend to cheer with their hearts but judges score fights with their eyes not their ears, so once again I'm not worried. Remember I said this several times Roth, Morreti and Martinez will call a fair fight they are great officials.
