Egis Klimas, manager of WBO/IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (26-1, 23KOs), says a fight with IBO/WBA/WBC Interim-middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28KOs) is not realistic. Kovalev is already set to face Jean Pascal on March 14th, provided the Canadian boxer wins his stay busy fight on Saturday night.
Because of their dominating performances and crushing knockouts, fans are already clamoring a fight between Golovkin and Kovalev.
But the fighters are two weight divisions apart, with 15-pounds separating them. Golovkin is not even considering the idea of going to 168 let alone a move to 175.
Fights that are realistic, says Klimas, are battles with Andre Ward and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. - if either fighter decides to move up from 168.
"I'm asked about whether there will be a fight between Kovalev and Golovkin? And I just want to ask - why not Kovalev-Mayweather or Pacquiao-Kovalev? These battles have far more money involved. People do not seem to understand that there is a difference of two weight divisions between Sergei and Gennady. And Gennady is satisfied with his weight category, and Sergei is fine with his own. So it's not realistic. Now, if Ward goes up by one division and moves up to 175 pounds or if Chavez resumes his career - that would be very realistic and interesting," Klimas said.
