Last week, it was reported that IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and Lamon Brewster were in talks for potential rematch in the summer. Brewster has not fought since last April when he lost his WBO title to Sergei Liakhovich. Suffering a serious eye injury, Brewster was forced to sit on the sidelines. He is now healthy and ready to return.
German newspaper Bild , one of the more popular papers in the country, reports that a rematch between Brewster and German heavyweight Luan Krasniqi is in the works for July 15 in Hamburg, Germany.
Krasniqi recently returned to action last weekend, scoring an impressive unanimous decision over Brian Minto in Germany. Brewster and Krasniqi faced off in 2005, with Brewster being badly outboxed until he came from behind to knock Krasniqi down in the eight round and finished him off in the ninth.
The bout with Klitschko was rumored to fall in late July/early August. One one hand, it's very hard for me to see Brewster turning down a title shot against a fighter he already stopped, not to mention a fighter considered by most as the number one heavyweight in the world. On the other hand, money talks and a rematch with Krasniqi in Germany may be worth a significant amount more than a fight with Klitschko, which would also take place in Germany. It may come down to which promoter will provide Brewster with the better deal.
