Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is still waiting to hear back from Lamont Peterson's team, regarding a seven-figure offer to face Amir Khan in a rematch on May 19th in Los Angeles. On December 10th in Washington, DC, Peterson captured the IBF/WBA junior welterweight titles with a twelve round split decision over Khan. Peterson notched two judges in his favor, with scores of 113-112, and the third judge had it for Khan, 115-110.
Schaefer and Khan's team are pressing for a rematch with the sanctioning bodies, disputing referee Joe Cooper's point deductions during the contest. Cooper took two points from Khan, claiming the boxer was excessively pushing Peterson.
Without the point deductions, Khan would have won a razor close unanimous decision.
While an offer for a rematch is sitting on the table, Schaefer has been advised that Peterson's team is exploring other options.
Schaefer was informed that members of Peterson's team had a meeting last week with Washington city leaders to discuss the possibility of staging another hometown fight.
“Lamont Peterson is going to have to go to his team and tell them to do the right thing,” Schaefer said.
