British star Amir Khan is claiming that his former trainer, Freddie Roach, is trying to sabotage his proposed 2015 clash with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Khan faces Devon Alexander on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. If he wins, a Mayweather fight is a good possibility for next year.
During an interview last month, Roach claimed that his main fighter, WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, had scored several knockdowns against Khan in their past sparring sessions.
Khan denied those rumors, stating that his former trainer is trying to discredit his shot at getting Mayweather. Khan and Roach parted ways in 2012, with the British star bringing Virgil Hunter on board.
“Freddie is upset because I left him, and he knows I’m very close to getting the Floyd Mayweather Jr .fight,” said Khan to the Manchester Evening News. “He’s trying to sabotage that because they want that fight themselves. Pacquiao hasn’t even got close to knocking me out. It’s funny how Freddie is saying that now. If you look at episodes of 24/7, he says Manny took a beating off me."
“I don’t like to talk about what goes on in sparring, but it was me who used to hurt him. It got to a stage where Manny’s team didn’t want me to spar with him any longer, because it was getting too personal and competitive.”
