Are Golden Boy Promotions setting up a junior welterweight eliminator to leave one man standing? Golden Boy's recent signing, WBA champion Amir Khan will defend his title against former Paulie Malignaggi on May 15 at the WaMu Theater in New York City's Madison Square Garden. Richard Schaefer, the CEO for Golden Boy, recently told Lem Satterfield of AOL's FanHouse, that he will try to make a fight between Ricky Hatton and Juan Manuel Marquez. Schaefer has tried to put this fight together for the last few months.
"[Marquez] really wants Hatton, and so I'll be talking to Ricky's people. And maybe both of those guys will do a fight in the fall. That's what Marquez wants to do. Hatton's people indicated to me that they would love to have a Marquez fight, and Marquez confirmed to me yesterday that he would love to fight Hatton," Schaefer said.
Marquez was due to fight Khan. He walked away from the fight; complaining that Golden Boy was using him as a stepping stone to groom Khan. If Malignaggi beats Khan, he wants a rematch with Hatton next. If Khan and Hatton both win, that puts what is probably the biggest fight on British soil in position to happen. At the moment the two biggest promotional companies in the United States are doing a lot of in-house matchmaking. It wouldn't surprise anyone if Golden Boy matches the Hatton-Marquez winner [if they finalize the fight] and the Khan-Malignaggi winner for the fall.
