Kevin Mitchell defends his WBO Inter-Continental title against Columbia’s Ignacio Mendoza on Saturday night and the Dagenham-based boxer has not been pulling any punches during the build up to the fight, which will take place at the Wembley Arena, London and is to be televised live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1.
Mitchell today told Sky Sports News that Amir Khan’s defection has left the way open for other fighters from Frank Warren’s stable to stake a claim, with Mitchell at the front of the queue for world honours following his shut-out win over Breidis Prescott in their WBO lightweight title eliminator back in December.
“If Amir Khan can get a world title fight two fights after a loss, and I'm unbeaten at 25 years of age, I'm more than ready for a world title fight,” roared Mitchell when speaking to the Sky cameras.
“I've been with Frank for seven years now. One day I will be a multi-millionaire, I will want to go abroad and be a world champion and me and Frank will go together. He guides people's career perfect, he does things right and I'm good friends with Frank,” revealed the 30-0 (22) fighter.
However, Mitchell must first get past Mendoza, who went toe-to-toe with John Murray for eight rounds before their fight was stopped due to a swelling on Murray’s forehead, though Murray won the WBC Youth World lightweight title bout on a technical decision. Mitchell has negotiated the hardest part of his world title path by defusing Prescott but he must be extremely wary going into this one, if he brings any hubris into the ring Mendoza could drag Kevin, who loves a tear up, into a war.
