Kevin Hayler Brown has wrapped up camp for his latest ambitious step up the boxing ladder.
The unbeaten Cuban junior welterweight is set to face Mexico’s Juan Meza in a scheduled 10-round main event this Friday on BXNGTV. The event will air live from Caribe Royale Orlando (Florida), which has housed all of Brown’s pro fights to date.
His latest training camp with renowned boxing coach Ismael Salas has left Brown feeling like he’s ready to compete for a major title. At this rate, such an opportunity can come sooner than later.
“Training in Las Vegas with Coach Salas has taken me to a different level—mentally, physically, and technically,” Brown insisted through a team press release. “Every day we focus on sharpening my skills and improving my ring IQ.
“This has been my most focused and intense camp yet.”
Brown, 7-0 (3 KOs) has fought in scheduled 10-rounders since his second pro bout and has gone that distance four times – including in each of his past three contests. In his most recent outing, the 31-year-old Cuban export – now based in Las Vegas – outpointed Esteuri Suero on April 18 in Orlando.
“Kevin Brown is taking big strides every time he steps in the ring,” noted Amaury Piedra, Brown’s promoter and founder of Boxlab Promotions. “His growth as a seasoned fight is getting better. What he’s shown so far is just the beginning of what he’s capable of.
“We believe he has all the tools to become a world champion, and we’re honored to guide him on that path. Fans in Orlando are in for something exceptional on September 19.”
The right fights have been lined up along the way.
Suero was best known for his disqualification loss with Floyd Schofield, against whom he provided fits before he was tossed in the fifth round last March 16 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He also pushed Starling Castillo to the limit in May 2013 points loss.
Brown also impressed against one-time rising prospect John Bauza, whom he soundly outpointed last September 6. More than 15 months before that, Brown turned away the pesky Julian “The Quiet Storm” Smith, who continues to boast a reputation as a prospect killer.
It was that mentality that led his braintrust to secure another opponent hungry to upset the apple cart.
Meza, 26, is barely two years removed from a stunning 2nd round knockout victory over Greg Outlaw, in a July 2023 road win in Hanover, Maryland. The bout marked his lone U.S. appearance and undoubtedly returns stateside with the intention to ruin Brown’s plans.
“Juan Meza is a tough, hungry fighter,” acknowledged Brown. “I respect what he brings to the ring, but I’m coming to make a statement. Styles make fights, and I believe mine will break him down. I’m prepared for whatever he brings.”
